We're thrilled to announce the program for the fifth Football Writers' Festival to be held at Preston Lions Football Club in Melbourne on October 5th and 6th.
The theme for this year's festival is Changemakers, and the program features fantastic sessions relevant to this theme with the program catering to a wide range of interests.
Brendan Schwab will give the opening address.
Our one-on-ones are with Adrian ’Noddy’ Alston, Gary Cole, Stephen Conroy, and Andy Bernal.
We’ll hear from the authors of a book on Football Agents by Peter Paleologos - which will be available before release exclusively at the festival - as well as a book written by Norwegian author and journalist Marius Lien about Lise Klaveness, practically the only person at the top level of football in the world who is willing to stick her neck out and try to be a changemaker.
We have panels on football history and story-telling with Lucas Gillard, Dr Jorge Knijnik and Professor John Maynard.
We chat to four novelists about how to create a story using football - Liz Deep-Jones, P.J. Laverty, Texi Smith, and Dr Karen Viggers.
We hear from three clubs doing innovative things in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane - APIA Leichhardt, Essendon Royals, and Wynnum Wolves.
We hear from Cameron Fink and Tony Wilson about some changemakers featured in a fabulous new film Puskás in Australia, the challenges for changemakers in football from Jack Kerr and Marius Lien, and consider the Matildas one year on from the tournament that rocked Australia with Elissia Carnavas, Dr Greg Downes and Dr Kasey Symons.
In a nod to our hosts, Andrew Howe will give us his 'fact file' on the Balkanites in Australian football.
We’ll launch the exciting Soccer Anzacs project led by Ian Syson.
And we bring back the FWF Great Debate - this time on who's adding value to whom, the national second division to football, or football to the national second division. 😎
Our authors, speakers, and session hosts come from Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Newcastle, Wollongong, Sydney and Melbourne.
As Saturday 5th October is the Final of the Australia Cup, it will be on the big screen as the Saturday night entertainment. Plus, because we’re at Preston Lions, you can imagine the food will be very good! Spoiler alert: there is more to Macedonian food than kebapi (aka cevapi)!
We are delighted that the festival will, once again, be MC'ed by Adrian Arciuli of SBS-TV who has been part of the festival since day one.
